Introduction

This research project aims to establish the benefits of dynamic research within music, and analyse how it is used by Artists and Engineers to convey their message.

This will incorporate analysis of commercially released music over the past 30 years, interviews with practitioners, research into the 'Loudness War' and what streaming platforms have done to control it. This will also include some of my own work demonstrating the concepts being discussed.

Too much dynamic range can undoubtably be as much of problem as limited dynamic range, however, ultimately I reside in the pro dynamic range camp when it is used correctly. This project will, however, present both arguments and contrast them with regards to genre specific aesthetics.

I will conclude the project with a statement regarding my views and take away points on the topics discussed and relate them to my own mastering work.
